Building a scheduling system is easy. Building one that never double-books? That's engineering.

A booking application might look simple on the surface: Select a date
Choose a time
Confirm the appointment

But behind those three steps are some interesting engineering challenges.

Imagine two users trying to book the same time slot at exactly the same moment.

What prevents both bookings from succeeding?

A reliable system needs more than a frontend validation check.

Database constraints and transactions to protect booking integrity
Concurrency control to handle simultaneous requests
Idempotency to prevent duplicate bookings during retries
Time-zone handling to avoid scheduling errors
Background jobs and notifications to keep users informed
Monitoring and logging to identify failures before they become bigger problems

The real challenge isn't making the happy path work. It's handling the unexpected situations gracefully.

That's one thing I love about building SaaS products: every seemingly simple feature has an engineering problem worth solving.

Backend engineers: Would you handle double-booking prevention primarily with database constraints, pessimistic locking, or optimistic locking? Why?
