A forecast is only useful if it changes a decision.

One thing I find fascinating about data science is that building an accurate model is only half the job.

Imagine a retail business preparing for the festive season.

Your model predicts a 40% increase in demand for a particular product. That sounds great, but the real questions are:

Do we have enough inventory to meet the demand?
Is the increase driven by seasonality, promotions, or changing customer behavior?
How confident are we in the prediction?
What happens if actual demand is significantly higher or lower?

This is where data science moves beyond prediction and starts creating business value.

A good forecasting workflow combines historical patterns, external factors, model evaluation, and uncertainty estimation to help businesses make smarter decisions.

Because ultimately, the goal isn't just to predict what might happen. It's to help people decide what to do next.

For fellow data scientists: What's more challenging in your experience — improving model accuracy or translating predictions into actionable business decisions?
